Short story by -lightsideluc [link]
Saw Horse spent every day crafting beautiful wooden chairs, tables and all other manners of carpentry with his bare hooves. He was content, happy, full of vim and vigour as he practised his one true talent.
Then, the unicorns moved in.
At first he was only too happy to have new neighbours. Seeing that they had a young colt, he made them a delicate picture frame to hold their family portrait, which they gladly accepted. One day, while chatting with the father unicorn, the topic of performing carpentry with magic came up. Saw was polite, but firm; no magic, at no time, could ever hope to compete against a proper hoof-made piece of furniture, decoration or art. However, the father took it as a personal affront, vowing that he would show Saw Horse just how much faster magic could make such things.
It began slowly, as the unicorn began to study crafting techniques and soon opened his own workshop. His projects were sloppy, inelegant; the chairs would leave slivers in a pony's rump, the tables would wobble, and his picture frames were uneven and were always tilted when hung on a wall. Despite this, he could make them fast, faster than Saw Horse ever could, if his pride would have let him. Not only that, but they were cheap and, despite their lack of quality, ponies would buy them simply because it was more affordable.
Saw Horse's business dried up; he could no longer afford the lumber or the tools needed to craft it. His very life crumbled around him as his one true talent was defeated by a unicorn that only understood money and not the heart and soul that went into it. As Saw Horse walked away from his home, having sold it for a mere pittance to pay off his debts, he could feel the father's glare of victory on his back, and on that day he swore revenge.
With keen blade and mind, he lured the unicorn to an abandoned lumber mill and cut off his horn. Fleeing into the night, he found himself overtaken by a feeling of disgust, yet the rush was even greater. From that day forth he stalked Equestria, searching for unicorns that used their magic at the expense of others and cut off their horns.
He earned a new name by his third victim.
The Horse Saw.
